8 Signs You Should See a Dentist (Not Buy a Supplement)
Symptoms like bleeding gums, tooth pain and loose teeth need a professional. Here is when to book an appointment.
This article is general information, not dental or medical advice. If you have symptoms, please see a dentist.
Supplements, mouthwashes and home remedies cannot treat an infection, a cavity or advanced gum disease. See a dentist if you notice any of these signs.
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss, especially if it keeps happening
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums pulling away from the teeth, making teeth look longer
- Bad breath or a bad taste that does not go away
- Loose teeth or a change in how your teeth fit together when you bite
- Tooth pain or sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods
- Holes, dark spots or stains on a tooth
- Swelling in the face or jaw, or pus around a tooth
Signs of gum disease and tooth decay listed by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
Get urgent help if you have facial swelling with fever, swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or severe pain that does not ease. Contact an emergency dentist or emergency services.
Why early treatment matters
Early gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with professional cleaning and good daily care. Left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, which can damage the bone that holds teeth in place. Small cavities are easier and cheaper to fix than large ones.
Where supplements fit
If a dentist has checked your mouth and you want to support your routine, a supplement may be something to discuss with them. We cover one example in our Dentitox Pro review, including its limits.
